Build Extras: BLUETOOTH WIRELESS BUILD UPGRADE
NOTE: THIS IS AN ADD-ON FOR KEYBOARD BUILDS ONLY TO UPGRADE A WIRED-ONLY BUILD TO WIRELESS. IF YOU DON’T HAVE A BUILD ORDER OR IF YOU DO AND IT’S ALREADY WIRELESS, YOU DON’T NEED THIS.
This build extra will upgrade your keyboard to be fully wireless. Each side will talk to each other wirelessly and the keyboard acts as a full BLE HID device on any bluetooth capable computer, pad, or phone. Each side is powered independently with its own battery (and each side must be charged independently.)
THERE ARE MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WIRED AND WIRELESS:
We use Nice!Nano controllers instead of rp2040 Pi Picos.
The firmware is ZMK, another open-source firmware based on Zephyr, a firmware with a focus on battery-life and wireless devices. It’s main repository is here: https://github.com/zmkfirmware/zmk
There are two price points, one for keyboards up to 4x6 and another for larger builds, as the larger builds require extra electronics and larger batteries.
We don’t recommend OLED screens or RGB with wireless builds, but it’s up to you. Your batteries won’t last nearly as long. Instead of OLEDs, you can use Nice!View screens, which are very well supported in ZMK and use very little power.
Each wireless half has a reset and power button, the halves will connect to one another automatically.
